Charity worker dies in Moldova

Michael McGoldrick was shot dead in July 1996

A County Armagh man who devoted his life to charity work following the murder of his son, has died in Moldova.

Michael McGoldrick's son, also Michael, was shot dead by loyalist paramilitaries, the LVF, 10 years ago.

Since then, his father and his mother, Bridie, have been involved in working for charity.

Mr McGoldrick was working in Moldova with United Christian Aid which supports families through sponsorship in Northern Ireland when he died.

His son's murder happened at the height of the Drumcree stand-off over an Orange Order parade in July 1996.

Mr McGoldrick, a Catholic, had been working as a taxi driver.

His body was found in his cab in a country lane at Aghagallon, several miles from Lurgan, a day after he had picked up a fare in the town.

He had been shot five times in the head. In 2003, Clifford McKeown from Craigavon was jailed for a minimum of 24 years for his murder.
