Roads warning after snow showers
Londonderry in the snow
Snowfalls were particularly heavy in the north west
A severe weather warning following snow showers across Northern Ireland has been issued by the Met Office.

Up to five inches of snow fell on high ground, with snowfalls particularly heavy in the north and west.

Temperatures dropped to about minus three degrees. The Glenshane Pass is reported to be passable with care.

The M1 motorway was reduced to one lane for a time. Other affected areas include Strabane, Donemana, Craigavon, Ballymena and Ballymoney.

Stephen Smith of the Roads Service warned that driving would be dangerous as overnight snow had fallen on frozen surfaces.

"I would ask people to allow additional time for journeys and exercise extreme care at all times," he said.

"All routes are passable, albeit with care."

Mr Smith said gritters were operating both on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. However, he said journey times would be increased.

Several schools have had to close for the day and more snow is expected throughout Wednesday.
