UK: Northern Ireland Factory sold in £23m deal ![]() Industrial history goes under the hammer The site of one of Northern Ireland's oldest factories has been sold in a deal worth £23m. The Sirocco works in east Belfast has been bought by cross border property group Dunloe Ewart, who plan to re-develop the site. Sirocco has been part of the industrial landscape of the area for more than a century. It once employed more than 1500 people, but in recent times its workforce has declined sharply. Earlier this year, the factory's owners, the Scottish group Howden, announced that it was going on the market. Located directly across the River Lagan from the Waterfront Hall, the 16-acre site is one of the few significant development opportunities left close to the city centre. The company says it plans a mixed use development there, including residential, business, retail and leisure elements, which it believes will make a major contribution to the city. |
