An investigation is under way at a special school in County Londonderry after one of its pupils was found to be infected with E.coli bacteria.

Kilronan Special School in Magherafelt was closed on Monday after a five-year-old pupil was found to be infected with the bacteria.

A teenager at the school is also suspected of having the bug.

The Northern Health Board said it was closing the school as a precaution while it tries to find the source.

Dr Michael Devine, consultant in communicable diseases with the board, said the source of the potentially fatal stomach bug still was not known.

"As a precautionary measure, the school has been closed while investigations are ongoing.

"A source has not been identified. All children attending the school will be screened before returning to the school," Dr Devine said.

Seventy-six children, aged between four and 19, attend the school.
