Devolution 'challenges lie ahead'

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain has spoken of the challenges which lie ahead in efforts to restore devolution.

Mr Hain made the comments in a pre-Christmas address, as he reflected on his past seven months in the post.

He said: "Everyone knows the political challenges which we will face in the New Year. No-one underestimates the difficulty of what lies ahead."

Mr Hain said his time as secretary of state had been both challenging and rewarding.

"I am encouraged that as I meet people from across Northern Ireland - from Bangor to Newry, Belfast to Enniskillen - all want to see the assembly return, with local politicians taking important decisions about the future," he said.

"I believe that Northern Ireland has a bright future. It has been transformed in recent years and with its well educated and highly skilled workforce, has so much to offer.

"I and my ministerial colleagues will redouble our efforts in the New Year to help Northern Ireland build on the benefits delivered by the peace process."

Christmas celebration

Mr Hain also said that he was looking forward to spending his first Christmas in Northern Ireland.

He said: "Christmas is a time for families, a time for coming together and giving thanks.

"Thousands of people have returned home in recent days to celebrate Christmas with their families.

"Like others across Northern Ireland, Elizabeth and I are looking forward to celebrating with our family in what will be our first Christmas in Northern Ireland.

"We should also remember those who will be working over the holiday period and who cannot spend time with their loved ones. We owe our doctors, nurses and all who work in the emergency services a huge debt of gratitude for their selfless devotion to duty."
