McAleese escapes injury in crash

President Mary McAleese was not injured in road accident
Irish President Mary McAleese has escaped injury after being involved in a minor road accident in County Meath.

The accident happened as Mrs McAleese, who is from Belfast, was being driven in her official car to her private home in County Roscommon.

A presidential spokeswoman said the vehicle was struck by a wheel that flew off a passing articulated lorry.

Only minor damage was caused and there were no injuries in the accident which happened at about 2330 BST on Friday.
