Bus drivers offered new pay deal

Bus drivers will vote on a new proposal from the bus and rail company Translink and the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) aimed at ending their overtime ban.

Drivers have been refusing to work overtime on both Ulsterbus services across Northern Ireland, and Citybus services in Belfast for over two weeks.

They voted three to one to reject a pay offer of 3% from Translink following GMB and TGWU union advice on Friday.

Around 2000 staff will vote on the new offer.


Young man killed in car crash

A 23 year-old-man from County Tyrone has been killed in a road accident in Donegal.

Ryan McGonagle from Clady was the driver of the car which went out of control and overturned on the main Lifford to Ballybofey road near Liscooley.

His girlfriend, a front seat passenger in the car received minor injuries.

Five released without charge

Five men arrested by Irish police investigating the activities of dissident republicans, were released without charge on Monday.

The five were picked up in the Tallaght, Mullhuddart and Palmerstown areas of Dublin on Saturday.

They were questioned at a number of Garda stations under Section 30 of the Republic's Offences Against the State Act.


Pipe bomb alert

A number of people were moved from their homes in north Belfast during a security alert in Cliftondene Crescent early on Monday morning.

The police carried out a search of the area and found a pipe bomb lying in the road.

The device, which was made from a five-inch steel pipe containing powder and a fuse, was made safe by Army bomb experts and removed from the scene for examination.


Pensioner beaten for 40 pence

A woman in her 70s has been beaten and robbed of 40 pence in Lurgan, County Armagh.

It is understood she was walking along the Old Portadown Road around 2100BST on Sunday night when she was attacked from behind by two youths.

The woman was taken to hospital suffering from bruising to her head and nose.


Man injured in paramilitary style beating

An 18-year-old man has been hospitalised in Londonderry after a masked gang forced their way into his home on Sunday night.

They burst into the house at Faughan Crescent just before 2100BST and beat him with baseball bats and a hammer.

He suffered puncture wounds to his lower left leg and his right knee and cuts and bruising to his head and arm.

The police are appealing for information about the attack.


Appeal for help after stabbing

The RUC are appealing for witnesses to a stabbing incident in Strabane.

Two men were injured in the attack which happened in the Abercorn Square area shortly before 0300 on Sunday morning.

It is not believed their injuries are serious.
