Corrs launch UK millennium festivities

The Corrs topped the bill at Omagh's Millennium concert

A free concert in Omagh starring the world famous Corrs ensured that Northern Ireland's millennium festival got a musical launch.

Musicians from all over Ireland entertained over 30,000 concert-goers as the town provided the launching pad for millennium celebrations throughout the UK.

Omagh was devastated last year when a bomb planted by a republican splinter group exploded killing 29 people and injuring dozens more.

NI Secretary of State Mo Mowlam read a message from the Prime Minister in which he paid tribute to the courage of the townspeople of Omagh.

Apart from the concert featuring the Corrs, the focal point of the evening's celebrations was the lighting of a millennium beacon.

Delegates from 20 cities throughout the UK were on hand to light special torches which will be used to ignite similar beacons in their own areas.

Omagh Chief Executive John McKinney expressed his pride at the town's selection to launch the UK millennium celebrations.

"The Council wants the people of the district and the rest of the country to look forward to the new millennium as a special time," he said.

Other acts on the bill in Omagh included hometown hero Dominic Kirwan and top traditional musicians Arty McGlynn and Liam O'Flynn.

Numerous events, including an extreme sports festival in Belfast, are being held in locations throughout Northern Ireland.
