A police officer and a teenager have been injured during disturbances in Londonderry.

Bottles and stones were thrown at police vehicles in the Foyle Street, William Street, Shipquay Street and Waterloo Place areas of the city.

A teenage girl was hit in the face with a bottle and a police officer suffered an eye injury caused by glass.

In Downpatrick, a man suffered a stab wound to his back after a disturbance outside a bar in Market Street.

He is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Police trying to administer first aid to the teenager in Derry had to remove her from the scene and meet up with an ambulance.

The disturbances, which police described as sporadic, started at about 1900 GMT on Thursday.

About 100 people were in the vicinity of the violence.

Police said they would be maintaining a presence in the area.
