Police officers have been attacked by a crowd of youths in west Belfast.

A police spokeswoman said up to 100 people were involved in disturbances in the Ballygomartin Road area on Friday. Petrol bombs and stones were thrown.

Police said that several officers suffered the effects of inhaling smoke when their armoured Land Rover was hit by at least eight petrol bombs.

A 17-year-old youth has been charged with riotous behaviour. A 13-year-old arrested at the scene has been freed.
