Tourism schemes rise to peace 'challenge'

The Mournes will be promoted as a regional park

Seven tourism projects in Northern Ireland have been awarded grants totalling £2.7m in a competition set up to encourage ideas which will attract new visitors.

The projects include:

  • Promoting the Mourne Mountains as a regional park
  • Upgrading Londonderry port to allow a Glasgow ferry service
  • And developing a cycle trail around Lough Neagh.

The Tourism Challenge awards were set up as part of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's £315m fund to encourage the peace process.

John McFall: "Tourism must generate wealth and employment"
Economy Minister John McFall said they were aimed at capital projects which would improve the competitiveness of the tourism industry.

"I am pleased to say there was a really enthusiastic response to the competition.

"The assessment panel had a tough job examining the many interesting and innovative projects which were presented."

Mr McFall said the tourism industry needed to develop the capacity to generate wealth and employment, particularly in areas of most need.

"Given the right conditions, I think that tourism can lead us on the path to prosperity."

Two hotel schemes, a youth hostel, and a tourism centre were also successful.

The winning schemes will receive grants ranging from £115,000 to £500,000.
