A 61-year-old man has been injured in a stabbing in Londonderry.

Ambrose Keeney was walking his dog Shandy near the Springtown Industrial Estate when he was approached by two men at 2230 BST on Tuesday.

After asking their victim for a cigarette, one of the men lunged at him and stabbed him in the chest.

Mr Keeney, who moved to Derry from Blackpool last year, was treated in hospital but his injuries are not thought to have been serious.

Mr Keeney, whose wife died of cancer in January, said he did not realise he had been stabbed until he got home.

"I got a knife stuck in my chest and they ran off," he said.

"I ended up in Altnagelvin hospital until about 0200 BST this morning, the surgeon said it was a knife wound.

"I thought I had been punched, I didn't realise it was a knife wound until I got home and saw the blood running down my shirt. I was really shocked."

He has since been discharged from hospital.

The police are appealing for information.
