A man remains seriously ill in hospital after he was shot in the stomach and legs in County Armagh.

The shooting happened at playing fields at Glenavon Lane in Lurgan about 1430 BST. It is reported that a man drove up on a motorbike and opened fire.

Police said while his injuries were serious, they were not thought to be life-threatening.

UUP assembly member Samuel Gardiner said he was "shocked" at the shooting which happened near a residential area.

DUP councillor Phillip Weir said police had told him they were keeping an open mind about the motive.

"Hopes that the days of gun rule were being relegated to history in the province appear unfortunately to be over-optimistic," Mr Weir added.

Police said they had not yet established a motive for the shooting.

They appealed for anyone with information about the attack to contact them.
