A 26-year-old man from Londonderry has been remanded in custody at the city's magistrates court in connection with a shooting at a bar in the city's centre.

James Paul Lindsay, of Melrose Terrace, faces two charges over the incident on Wednesday in which two people were shot with a pellet gun.

He is charged with grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent.

A detective told the court that when charged, Mr Lindsay said "I'm sorry".

In reply to a question from the defendent's solicitor, the officer agreed there was no paramilitary connection to the incident.

The defendant was remanded in custody to appear by video link on 30 June, but his solicitor said his client would be applying for High Court bail.

A male customer was hit once in the head and twice on the hand. A woman sitting nearby was struck on the chest during the incident in the Oval bar on Duke Street

The victims' injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The male victim is said to be in a stable condition in Altnagelvin Hospital where he was expected to have surgery.
