The amount of hazardous waste illegally dumped in Northern Ireland increased by more than seven times over the course of 12 months, it has emerged.
Lady Hermon said illegal dumpers were "reprehensible"
The figures were contained in an answer by Northern Ireland Office minister Angela Smith to a parliamentary question asked by North Down MP Lady Sylvia Hermon.
It showed the amount of illegally dumped hazardous waste increased from nine tonnes in 2002 to 67 tonnes in 2003.
Lady Hermon said on Wednesday that she had asked for urgent clarification on prosecutions and penalties imposed on people caught dumping illegally.
Describing those involved as "reprehensible", she said they were "putting the environment and people's lives in danger".
