Party 'targeted' after murder
PUP leader David Ervine
Mr Ervine said police warned him of the threat
A loyalist paramilitary group is targeting senior figures in the Progressive Unionist Party and the Ulster Volunteer Force, it has emerged.

Police warned PUP leader David Ervine of the threat on Wednesday, following the fatal shooting of a Loyalist Volunteer Force member in Belfast earlier this week.

The UVF are believed to be behind the killing of 34-year-old Brian Stewart.

The plumbing firm driver was shot dead at close range in an industrial estate in the city shortly before 0800 BST on Tuesday.

Both loyalist groups have been involved in recent feuding in the city.

Mr Ervine told the BBC on Thursday that the warning was based on intelligence information available to the police Special Branch.

The PUP is aligned with the UVF.
