Controlled explosions on car
Police operation in Belfast
The security operation was mounted after a bomb warning
A number of controlled explosions have been carried out on a suspect car in north Belfast.

Army technicians examined the car in the New Lodge area.

The alert followed a hoax bomb call, said police.

Meanwhile, a major security operation is continuing in Belfast, after dissident republicans claimed a bomb would be left at an unidentified police station.

It is understood the alert began after a phone call was received by a media outlet on Wednesday, allegedly from the Continuity IRA.

The police said the threat was being taken seriously following a gun attack on a police station in Londonderry last week and the potential for groups to exploit the political talks at Leeds Castle in Kent.

The police operation involves vehicle checks on arterial routes in and out of the city.
