Scholar tops university quiz
Freya McClements
Freya is only the second woman to captain a winning team
A County Londonderry student has become only the second woman to captain a winning team on the BBC quiz University Challenge.

Freya McClements, 23, led her team from Magdalen College, Oxford, to victory in the prestigious university competition.

The team secured the coveted title by beating Gonville and Caius, Cambridge, by 190 points to 160 on Monday.

The Castlerock girl, who is a former pupil of Dalriada Grammar School, said neither the questions, nor the intimidating style of quiz master Jeremy Paxman posed any problems.

"It is fantastic, it is an absolute dream come true, it is something that I never thought I could never achieve," she said.

"It has been a goal of mine since I started quizzing at the age of 12 and everybody said, one day will Freya go for University Challenge.

"I am just over the moon that I have finally achieved my dream."

Freya gained a first class honours degree in Modern History at Magdalen and is currently studying Anglo Irish Literature at Trinity College Dublin.
