Officers escape injury in attack
It is the second attack on officers in the city this week
Police have been attacked with petrol bombs and other missiles as youths rioted in Londonderry.

About 14 devices were thrown as officers moved in to the Fountain area in the city on Thursday night.

One person was arrested in connection with the disorder and a number of petrol bombs were recovered.

The disturbances began at 2230 BST when paint was thrown at officers who were called to Bishop Street where youths had been throwing stones.

About an hour later, devices were thrown towards officers in the Fountain area and a police vehicle was hit by two petrol bombs in Nailor's Row.

Devices were also thrown in Fahan Street and Bishop Street.

Appeal

There are no reports of any injuries.

Acting Chief Inspector Des Austin said he believed the trouble was the result of a build up of tension over a forthcoming Apprentice Boys parade.

"I would appeal to all local community representatives to use whatever influence they have in the area to try and dampen this tension that appears to be rising at this particular time in the run up to the Apprentice Boys parade," he said.

It is the second attack on police officers in the city this week.

On Tuesday, a number of petrol bombs were thrown at officers as they attended a call in Drumcliff Avenue in the Bogside area.

One police vehicle was slightly damaged.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with any information about either incident to contact them.
