A man has died and another has been injured in a suspicious fire at a flat on the outskirts of north Belfast.

Fire crews were called to the scene at Glenville Park in Whiteabbey just before 2200 BST on Tuesday.

Children spotted the fire through the front window and called the Fire Service.

Three crews with 15 firefighters arrived at the scene.

The 48-year-old man lived in the flat and it was his 41-year-old friend from across the road who was rescued by neighbours.

The injured man is being treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he is said to be seriously ill.

A woman who was also in the flat at the time escaped injury.

It is not yet known how the fire started.

The police said they were treating the blaze as suspicious.
