A group of people in Ballycastle, County Antrim, have seized a number of cannabis plants during raids on homes in the area.

They destroyed the plants by pouring diesel over them, before leaving them at an isolated location outside the town for the police to pick up.

The police said they recovered a total of six plants after the raids on Monday night.

Philip McGuigan from Sinn Fein said he welcomed the fact that there were now fewer drugs in circulation in the town.

"My understanding is that this action was carried out by very concerned people," he said.

However, Ulster Unionist councillor Helen Harding said while she deplored drugs, the police should be given every support for they alone to act against alleged dealers.

"I don't agree with with drugs at all, but nor do I agreed with the apparent way that people went about this in Ballycastle last night in a vigilante-style approach," she said.

"The police should be supported in tackling the drugs issue."
