The murder of a west Belfast man was "out of time, out of place and totally unnecessary" a priest has told mourners at his funeral Mass.

Father-of-six Daniel McGurk, 35, was murdered at his home at Ross Road in the lower Falls area of west Belfast last Sunday.

Three men entered his house and shot him five times in the legs and chest.

His family believe the shooting was carried out by dissident republicans.

'No political connections'

Requiem Mass took place on Saturday at St Paul's Church on the Falls Road in west Belfast, just a few hundred yards from his mother's home where mourners had gathered.

The homily was given by Fr Matt Wallace who had officiated at the wedding of Mr McGurk and his wife Patsy.

Fr Wallace said Mr McGurk's death was "out of time, out of place, and totally unnecessary" and said his killers were the "devil's disciples".

He said he had not deserved to be murdered in front of his wife and some of his children.

Fr Wallace added that the only reason he was murdered was because he had stood up for the people he loved.

He said the dead man had no political connections and belonged to no political party.

Three floral tributes spelling out the names "husband", "son" and "daddy" were on the hearse as it made its way to the church.

Mr McGurk was buried in the city cemetery.

His remains were returned to his family on Thursday after the High Court upheld a coroner's decision to reject an application for a second post mortem examination.
