Man dies in police shooting
Ballinderry Upper

A man has died of gunshot wounds after police fired at a car which failed to stop and hit two officers in County Antrim.

It is understood that police officers attempted to stop a vehicle following suspicious activity at about 1900 BST on Tuesday on the Crumlin Road, at Ballinderry Upper near Lisburn.

The car failed to stop at the junction of Crumlin Road and Ogales Road, where it struck two police officers.

Police fired shots, hitting two men.

One man was critically injured, and later died after being taken to Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn.

It is understood he was in his mid-20s, although his name has not yet been released.

The second man is being treated at Craigavon Area Hospital for gunshot wounds to his arm, where his condition is described as stable.

One of the police officers sustained injuries to his back, legs and right arm, and is in a comfortable condition at Lagan Valley Hospital.

The condition of the other officer is unclear.

Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan has been informed and is to carry out an investigation.

A spokesman for Mrs O'Loan said officers were being briefed about the incident.
