A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody on a firearms charge linked to an incident in which a man was shot dead by police.

Unemployed David Somers, of no fixed address, appeared via video-link at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He is charged with possession of a sawn-off semi-automatic shotgun with intent to endanger life.

He was arrested during a police surveillance operation that ended in officers shooting at a car near Lisburn, County Antrim, on 29 April.

One of the two men in the vehicle, Neil John McConville, 21, from Bleary in Craigavon, was shot and died later in hospital.

A second man was also wounded in the gunfire after their car failed to stop at a checkpoint on the Crumlin Road at Upper Ballinderry.

The Police Ombudsman's office is investigating the killing.

Mr Somers was remanded in custody to appear in court again via video-link on 24 June.
