The women had just crossed the border
Two sisters from Northern Ireland have been killed in a car crash in the Republic of Ireland.

Tara Heaney, 30, and her 18-year-old sister Cheryl from Omagh, County Tyrone died when their car was involved in a head-on crash with another vehicle at about 2220 BST on Tuesday.

The women had just crossed the border, heading towards Dublin, when the accident happened near Monasterboice in County Louth.

Two men, who were in the other car involved in the crash, were freed from the wreckage and taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Appeal for witnesses

Both were said to be in a stable condition.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "Two women from Omagh were dead at the scene of the accident.

"Two males going north were injured in the head-on collision and are in a stable condition in hospital."

Officers have appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact them.
