Pensioner was stabbed near his home in Coleraine

A pensioner who died nearly two months after being stabbed in a County Londonderry town has been buried.

Norman Moffatt, 73, was stabbed at the junction of Railway Road and Circular Road in Coleraine as he walked back from a local shop.

The attack was captured on closed-circuit television.

He had been on his way home from collecting his daily paper on 26 January when he was attacked.

He underwent surgery for stab wounds to the abdomen at Coleraine Hospital.

Mr Moffatt, who was married with two children, died in hospital on Monday morning.

His funeral took place at New Row Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon.

The Reverend Robert McMullan told mourners that his death was a tragedy for the family and for Coleraine, and that people must pray that the RUC bring the perpetrator to justice.

The police say they are now treating their investigation into the attack as a murder inquiry.

They say a 26-year-old man was arrested and interviewed shortly after the stabbing.

He was released on police bail.
