In pictures: Your worst railway stations

Wakefield Kirkgate station

Wakefield Kirkgate doesn't make the Department for Transport's 10 worst stations list, much to Chris Hughes' surprise. "If necessary I will even change my travel arrangements so I do not go through it."

Wakefield Kirkgate station underpass

Matthew Heptinstall agrees. "The facilities and condition are wholly inadequate. The rundown underpass creates an intimidating and uncomfortable atmosphere that is unnerving for many."

Wakefield Kirkgate station

Chris Hughes also sent this photo of Kirkgate's non-existent platform roof. "The main reasons I don't use the station are because it can be a hub of violence and anti-social behaviour."

Clapham Junction station in a downpour

Also problematic in the rain is Clapham Junction, says Nick Slocombe. "As you can see the guttering was incapable of dealing with the downpour."

Crewe station

Joseph Swan reckons Crewe still edges it. "It's not just an eyesore but has hopelessly out of date information, e.g: posters extolling the virtues of the area. The last speedway race [poster on right] in Crewe was in 1975."

Greenbank station in Cheshire

Greenbank station in Cheshire, by David Ingham. Debris between the rails usually includes broken beer bottles and cans, alcopop bottles, used condoms, syringes.

Denmark Hill station

Steve Holloway nominates Denmark Hill. "This is a hospital station which has no lift. Thousands of people who work at Kings College Hospital have to file through one little door each morning, so it takes 15 minutes to get out."
