"July and August was up, then in September it fell back a bit," says managing director Robert Gibbs.

"October was the same as Sept, which was about 10% down on last year. In summer there were various promotions on and people had a more positive outlook. We're very dependent on how people are feeling about life in general."

A lot of his business, he says, comes from older customers with no mortgage and a reasonable disposable income, but reductions in interest rates will have affected their savings.

"Due to the general unease, they are a bit cash-conscious. Compared with two or three years ago, people have down-sized. The 26-inch used to be the television for the bedroom but now it's the main television.

"I've been through four recessions. The other ones tended to be short and sharp but this one seems to be more protracted and deep-seated."
