Movie stars quiz

Viewers of University Challenge groaned when contestants failed to identify a picture of screen legend James Stewart. So how well do you know your movie idols? The Magazine tests your knowledge.

  3. Maureen O'Hara is on the left. She is probably best remembered for The Quiet Man, opposite John Wayne, and Miracle on 34th Street. O'Sullivan was arguably Ireland's first movie star and she played Jane in six Tarzan films with Jonny Weismuller.

  6. Douglas Fairbanks Jr is A. The son of another actor, Douglas Fairbanks Sr, he served with distinction in the US Navy in World War II and received an honorary knighthood. B is Rudolph Valentino and C is Buster Keaton.
  7. Clara Bow is in the picture on the left. The other actress is Mary Pickford, another big movie star of the time.
  8. Stewart Granger is on the right. He's the British actor famous for his heroic and romantic leads. Farley Granger, left, is well known for his roles in Hitchcock films Rope and Strangers on a Train.
  9. Gary Cooper is B. A is Alan Ladd, who starred in Shane and C is Randolph Scott, who made his last Western, Ride the High Country, aged 64.
  10. Lawrence was played by O'Toole in David Lean's 1962 classic, which won seven Oscars. The other three actors, including Sharif pictured on the right, were all in supporting roles.
