Audio slideshow: 50 years of Carry On

The first Carry On film - Carry On Sergeant - was released in August 1958. Over the next two decades, audiences flocked cinemas to see these iconic British comedies.

Commentators and Carry On stars reflect on how the Carry On franchise held a mirror up to society, but eventually, the format was unable to adapt to the pace of social change.
