Cash stolen in ram raid on Halifax bank in Chippenham

Raiders targeted the bank as money was being delivered to load the ATM

Boxes of money have been stolen in a ram raid on a bank in Chippenham.

The Halifax, in Market Place, was targeted by robbers as money was being delivered to the bank at 1843 GMT on Monday.

Wiltshire Police said a silver Ford Focus car was driven through the front of the building.

Three men got out of the vehicle and stole an as yet unknown amount of cash, which was being delivered for loading into a cash machine.

Driven at speed

Officers said the men then abandoned the Ford Focus and fled the scene in a black Volkswagen van.

A van of the same description, with its licence plates removed, was later found about 300m away in St Mary Street.

The security guards were not injured and the police are still trying to establish whether witnesses saw any weapons being used.

Det Sgt Mark Kent appealed for anyone who saw a van being driven in the area at speed, or at least three men abandoning a vehicle and getting into another, to contact the police.

He said: "Additionally, I need to establish whether this third vehicle drove off back in the Market Place direction, or whether it continued along St Mary Street in the direction of London Road."
