Council cares for young stowaways

Seven teenage stowaways found inside a lorry in Devizes are to be cared for by Wiltshire Council until they reach the age of 18.

The seven, six Iraqis and one Afghan, are all aged between 14 and 17 which means they are classed as vulnerable.

They were picked up by police along with seven other illegal immigrants in Devizes last week.

Wiltshire Council said it was an unusual situation but hoped it would get government money to care for them.

The teenagers were among 14 people from Iraq and Afghanistan discovered by a French lorry driver when he opened up the container of his truck on 30 October.

Seven adult stowaways remain in the custody of Border Agency officials.
