Mail deliveries affected in city

People living in parts of Bristol will have disruptions to postal deliveries as about 170 Royal Mail staff take industrial action.

Many workers at the Montpellier and Whitehall depots will be striking, meaning no mail will be delivered to the BS5, BS6 and BS7 postcodes.

Deliveries will be limited to Special Delivery and Royal Mail Tracked items. Mail collection is unaffected.

Royal Mail said it was unhappy at the idea of further strike action.

It would not comment directly on the Bristol strike, but in a UK-wide statement condemned the Communication Workers Union (CWU) plans.

'Cut overtime'

Workers at Yate, Keynsham and Portishead have also voted for strike action and a further 11 depots are balloting.

Rob Wotherspoon, from the CWU, said Royal Mail was cutting jobs and salaries without agreement or consultation.

"Bosses are cutting full time jobs to part time, they'll put more weight on our backs, give us longer deliveries, cut out overtime - they are doing all this all without agreement or consultation - it's absolutely outrageous.

"The only people working are managers from around the area and they don't get as much work done as trained postal workers.

"[The strike] is 100% supported by the workers in this unit and this will have a big impact on Royal Mail and they will have to listen to us," he added.
