Compensation for disabled cyclist

A Swindon cyclist, left severely disabled after being hit by a car is expected to receive more than £4m in compensation, the High Court heard.

Graham Gregory of Blunsden, Swindon, lost the use of all his limbs in the 2005 accident.

The 48-year-old was cycling home from a friend's house in Wootton Bassett when he was struck from behind by the car.

Following the accident he spent two years at National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville hospital.

Mr Gregory was finally released from Salisbury Hospital in February 2008 having been transferred there the previous year.

Prior to the accident he had a number of jobs including erecting and dismantling fairground rides and working at a motorway service station, but he is now dependent on others and lives in a specially-adapted bungalow.

The amount of the compensation has yet to be finally assessed, but lawyers confirmed outside court that they expect him to receive "in excess of £4m", mainly to cover the enormous costs of a lifetime of round-the-clock care.
