Man guilty of drinking row murder

Matthew Baggott
Mr Baggott had been stabbed a number of times

A Wiltshire man has been convicted of murdering another man in Devizes.

Daniel de Costa, 31, from Melksham, stabbed Matthew Baggott on 6 September 2007 after a minor argument during a late-night drinking session.

Winchester Crown Court heard Mr Baggott, 35, from Devizes, had criticised de Costa for smashing a glass bottle on church grounds.

Later that night de Costa embraced his victim then delivered the fatal wound, the jury heard.

De Costa claimed to suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), meaning he was not fully responsible for his actions.

But the jury rejected his guilty plea to manslaughter, delivering its verdict after deliberating for less than an hour.

Sentencing was adjourned until Wednesday.
