Inventor Sir James Dyson has unveiled a new digital motor with a faster rpm than a Formula One engine.

The new V2 device, designed by Dyson's R&D team in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, is designed to provide extra power for hand-held electrical devices.

By losing copper wiring and carbon brushes, the company says the motor is lighter and more efficient than rivals.

The motor turns at 104,000 rpm, controlled by a micro-processor and extremely powerful magnets.

Sir James said: "Bigger motors don't always equal better performance. The huge leap in speed means that you get more power output out of the new motor."

The company is currently considering various uses for the new technology, which should help retain jobs in the Malmesbury plant.
