Body of man found in churchyard

A man's body has been found in the grounds of a Wiltshire churchyard.

The body was discovered at St James' Church in the High Street in Avebury on Saturday morning, a Wiltshire Police spokesman said.

The death of the man is not thought to be suspicious, the force spokesman added.

Det Sgt Simon Pope said he was believed to have been in his 40s and not from the area. The officer appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "It is not believed that the man is local and inquiries are ongoing to establish his identity and alert his next of kin.

"The church and the immediate area were cordoned off this morning while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the death.

"The area was reopened this afternoon."

Hundreds of people have been heading to Wiltshire for the summer solstice celebrations.
