Scouts rescue climber on mountain

The Scouts helped carry the injured woman down the mountain

A group of Scouts from Wiltshire came to the aid of a climber who had got into difficulty in freezing conditions near Aviemore in the Highlands.

The group from North Bradley lived up to the Scout motto 'Be Prepared' after the stricken 29-year-old woman climber fell and broke her leg 1,600 ft up.

Scout leader Neil Wills radioed for help while sheltering the climber.

The woman, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, was taken to hospital, where she was treated for a break to her left leg.

Scouts Pete Woodhead and Harry Newman, both 17, and David Keiller and Andrew Woodhead, both 20, joined a mountain rescue team and assembled a stretcher to bring the woman down safely.

The injured woman's legs were strapped before she was placed on the stretcher and the four young men carried her down to a waiting ambulance.

"It was my first rescue and my good turn for the day. I felt proud to have played a part in her safe return," said Mr Newman.

Mr Woodhead added: "It was an honour to serve a fellow climber who really needed help. I would certainly do it again should the occasion arise."
