Two students from a school in Wiltshire have been taken to hospital after a chemical incident.

It is believed a release of sulphur dioxide gas at Ridgeway School in Wroughton near Swindon affected 90 pupils over three classrooms.

The cause of the accident appeared to be a science experiment that had gone wrong, a fire service spokesman said.

"Affected pupils are being treated at the scene but the gas is not a threat to surrounding homes," he added.

A spokesman for Great Western Ambulance said the service received a call from the school science lab at 1210 BST.

"Two doctors and a nurse have been sent to the school," he added.

Excessive exposure to sulphur dioxide can affect the eyes, lungs and throat.
