The transfer of stock to the new library will take three weeks

A major operation has begun to transfer 60,000 books from a temporary library in Swindon to a brand new facility due to open next month.

It is expected to take three weeks to stock the new £10m flagship Central Library in Regent Circus.

The temporary Princes Street site will be shut during that time, but borrowers can renew or return books at any of the 15 other libraries in the borough.

The new library is due to open on 20 October.

It will have 17,000 extra new books, taking the total to 77,000, and more than 60 free-to-use computers.

An Express Zone will offer services for an extra four hours a day outside normal opening hours from Monday to Saturday.

And the Central Library will be open for four hours on Sundays.

Councillor Justin Tomlinson, cabinet member for leisure, culture and recreation, said: "With the opening of Swindon's fantastic new Central Library now just weeks away, the excitement is building.

"I am confident everyone will be impressed with the new facility."
