Wiltshire's deputy chief constable, Stephen Long, is cycling 220 miles to raise £10,000 for charity.
During the three-day ride he plans to visit all the neighbourhood policing teams in the county and collect donations from officers
Mr Long plans to set off on Wednesday from police HQ in Devizes returning there on Friday, his last day in the force after more than 30 years service.
He has been in training since May riding up to 70 miles a day.
In December 2004 the then chief constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Steve Pilkington, raised £55,000 for a children's hospice at Wraxhall, North Somerset.
He also timed his charity ride to finish on his last day with the force.
Speaking prior to the event Mr Pilkington said the ride was a personal challenge for him as he "hates bikes".
