Proposed Gypsy sites 'unsuitable'

Six sites proposed as potential new Gypsy encampments in North Wiltshire have been deemed unsuitable.

The district council has recommended none of the areas in Wootton Bassett, Calne and Chippenham are appropriate.

The decision follows a six-week public consultation. Earlier this month 200 people marched through Chippenham in protest at the plans.

The authority cannot evict Gypsies from a site in Minety without providing alternative facilities.

The council tried to move a group of Gypsies from Minety in 2007 but was told by the government to provide somewhere else for them to go.

Central government is to provide £250,000 to help pay for the sites.
