Car sharing scheme gets under way

A new free car-sharing scheme has begun in a Wiltshire town to try and ease congestion in the town.

A website has been set up by Swindon Borough Council to match up people who make similar journeys into Swindon itself and the surrounding area.

Marc Argent, Swindon's travel awareness officer, said it was a good way to save money usually spent on fuel.

Wiltshire County Council has operated a similar scheme successfully for more than three years.

Council employee John Quinton has made use of its scheme on three days each week, saving around £20 a week or £1,000 a year.

He travels from Dorchester to Trowbridge with a car share "buddy".

He said the scheme worked well if people were "very flexible".
