Bogus charity warning across town

Bogus charities are targeting Swindon residents into giving away unwanted clothing, the town's trading standards team has warned.

The crooks post collection bags claiming unwanted items will be given to eastern European countries - but, in fact, they are being sold for profit.

Residents are asked to leave the goods by the front door for collection.

Councillor Brian Mattock said: "The bags have been received in Haydon Wick, but the problem could be widespread."

Phil Thomas, head of commercial regulation at the council, added: "Many charities now ask householders for old clothes and other items, which can be sold for charitable purposes.

"However, the best course of action for anyone wishing to donate unwanted goods would be to take the items directly to the charity shops.

"A list of authentic charities is also available on the Charity Commission website."
