Permanent sites plan for gypsies

Permanent gypsy sites are to be set up in North Wiltshire after a council was told it could not evict them without providing alternatives.

North Wiltshire Council said some 24 permanent sites would be needed.

The council tried to move a group of gypsies from Minety in 2007 but was told by the government to provide somewhere else for them to go.

Six possible locations are being looked at - two in Calne, two in Chippenham and two in Wootton Bassett.

Central government is to provide £250,000 to help pay for the sites.
