The cause of the blast is not known
At least four families will have to stay out of their homes this Christmas after an explosion at a block of flats in Swindon.

The blast happened at about 0720 GMT on Sunday at the flats in Toothill.

A man, 44, was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and crime scene investigators spent much of Christmas Eve at the flats.

Swindon Borough Council said the displaced families had been offered alternative accommodation.

'Helpline opened'

The spokeswoman added: "Staff have been working around-the-clock to make sure as many people as possible can return to their homes in time for Christmas.

"This is the case for the majority of residents and alternative accommodation has been arranged for residents of the four flats which are not accessible.

"Over the festive period the council will continue liaising with affected residents, who can receive additional support and information by calling 01793 466451."

The cause of the blast is not yet known and extra security has been brought in to protect the empty buildings over the holidays.

On Sunday one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries and extensive damage was caused to one flat.
