Park shells out on tortoise Winky

A three-legged tortoise has been fitted with a wheel and suspension system to help her get around Longleat safari park in Wiltshire.

Winky, aged about 50 and one of the oldest tortoises at the park, has already worn out three wheels since she arrived four years ago.

She now sports a two-inch pneumatic tyre and suspension with shock absorbers, designed by a model maker.

"The new system is incredible," said Longleat spokesman Darren Beasley.

He said: "When Winky first came in she was in good health but was barely able to move around.

"We put her in a special indoor vivarium to bring her on before fitting her with a specially adapted wheel, and she just got more and more active."
