Swindon's Wyvern theatre remains closed until further notice after asbestos was discovered in a routine inspection.
The theatre will close for at least three weeks
Nearly all of the asbestos found at the theatre is contained within the roof space but low amounts have also been found within the auditorium.
Air testing within these areas has shown levels to be within Health and safety Executive (HSE) limits.
A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said no-one in the audience would have been "at risk" from the asbestos.
The council's decision to close the theatre on public heath grounds has been fully supported by the HSE.
All of the clean-up work will be carried out by specialist contractors.
Swindon Borough Council is currently investigating why inspections carried out by accredited contractors in 2002 and 2004 did not reveal the presence of asbestos.
The council is working closely with the theatre management to find alternative venues for scheduled events.
