The new central library will be next to the Town Hall
The design for Swindon's new central library has been unveiled.

Built next to the Town Hall, the £10m facility will house the lending and reference libraries under one roof.

English Heritage has approved the design, which will combine old and new architectural styles to complement the hall's 19th Century exterior.

"We want this building to be appreciated for many generations, which is why it will be solidly-built from red brick," said Cllr Justin Tomlinson.

Building work is due to begin in August, with an opening date of May 2008.

Portable buildings which have served as home for the library for the past 30 years will soon be removed.

A new temporary home for the library collections will be announced shortly.
