A man was run over by a gang of thieves who stole three vehicles from his drive and then drove a van the wrong way up the M4 in a police pursuit.
Police were called to a house in Covingham, Swindon, on Sunday to reports a man and his wife were injured trying to stop raiders.
The 56-year-old man received serious leg injuries in the attack.
A white van was driven the wrong way on the A419 and M4 before being stopped by officers.
Two people were arrested and later released on bail.
'Failed to stop'
A police spokesman said a white Transit-style van, a black Ford Ka and a Skoda Fabia were taken from the house in the early hours of Sunday.
The vehicles failed to stop for police and were followed into Dorcan, where the Skoda backed into a wall in attempt to avoid arrest.
The occupants then drove off in another vehicle and have not been captured.
Police followed the Transit towards Cirencester then back towards Swindon. At Cricklade the vehicle drove the wrong way down the A419 and officers abandoned the chase.
The van was then spotted joining the M4 at junction 15 (Swindon east), driving against the traffic towards London on the westbound carriageway.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle but it carried on towards Membury Services.
The spokesman said: " Unfortunately the vehicle still did not stop and unbelievably the driver carried on driving along the motorway towards Membury services with a total disregard for the safety of themselves and other motorists."
